Mr Dickens' eventful journey from Leicester to... →
I have criticised the decision by the Leicester Beer Festival organisers to adopt a Charles Dickens-themed logo this year, on the grounds that Dickens had few links to the city of Leicester. After a bit of googling, I’ve found that he visited the city at least twice. His train journey out of Leicester after his second visit was so terrifying that he was prompted to write a letter to The...

Mog Eats a Mouse My cat brought a mouse in and ate it earlier today. I was listening to Jarvis Cocker’s BBC 6Music radio show at the time, and as luck would have it Jarvis was playing some entirely appropriate music for such an occasion.

6 Music Playlist - John Cooper Clarke →
Another excellent programme from BBC 6Music, in which John Cooper Clarke gets an hour to play some of his favourite records. It turns out that the Bard of Salford is a big fan of classic ’50s rock and roll.

Now Playing @6Music - New Order →
Last night in our kitchen, as Jane prepared our usual Friday night home-made pizzas, we both thoroughly enjoyed listening to Tom Robinson’s Now Playing @6Music programme on all things New Order. As well as tracks by the band, it also featured records that influenced them, bands that they influenced, some covers of New Order songs and work from the band members’ side projects. At one...

Jamie Oliver finds Joy Division and New Order... →
“Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has apparently found rare Joy Division and New Order master tapes when digging up the basement of a new restaurant in Manchester. The new restaurant, which is being built in a former branch of Midland bank, was being excavated when the tapes were found, alongside guns, gold and jewellery. The total value of the haul is £1.1 million.”

My first ever batch of homebrew (a Trappist Tripel) has been bubbling away satisfactorily for the last 24 hours. You’ll see that the BruBox that I’m using has quite a primitive tube and jug airlock system. The jug was originally placed on a newspaper, which soon became soaking wet as occasional large escapes of gas down the tube sent water splashing out of the jug. For this reason, it...

UK braced for mediocre weather photography →
“SNOWY weather will result in a million of pictures of nothing much, experts have warned. Arctic conditions across the UK are expected to drive people with too much time on their hands into a frenzy of pointless weather-based amateur photography. But veteran life coach, Roy Hobbs, said: “Snowy things are far less of a novelty than you think they are. Stay indoors. “You may...
